Construction worker dies from fatal jobsite accident in Carolinas

Charleston, SC – Certain industries such as construction work have a large number of accidents that happen every year. Workers in these high risk occupations should be sure to learn about their company’s workers compensation insurance and how to file a report if there is ever an injury.

WCNC reported on a workplace accident that took the life of a man in the Carolinas [1].

Excavator incident causes construction site fatality

Emergency response crews were called to the scene just after 3 pm on a Monday afternoon. The job site was located in the area of Nixon Road in Belmont, NC. When police came onto the scene, they found the body of a worker who was apparently involved in some kind of incident with an excavator. While details regarding the specifics of how the incident happened were scarce, the police are classifying the death as a construction site accident. No personal details about the man’s age or other identifying facts were released at the time.

The process after a workplace accident

After anyone is injured on the job, the situation should be reported to the employer immediately and others should call 911 if it appears that the victim needs medical attention. Following the incident, there may be a few options for injured workers who want to receive financial assistance and other benefits.

Workers compensation benefits

Workers compensation is a type of insurance that employers in South Carolina must pay for. This helps cover a percentage of the person’s wages, as well as things like medical bills and costs of more training while they recover. While people who are injured in sudden accidents can file for workers compensation, those who develop long term health problems because of dangers and occupational hazards on their job can be eligible to receive certain benefits as well.

Wrongful death lawsuits

In situations such as this where a worker dies, a wrongful death lawsuit may be possible as well. This type of civil case allows the family to receive compensation that is similar to other negligence cases such as medical costs, lost income and wages, pain and suffering, and the costs of a funeral and burial. These cases can be brought regardless of whether or not the death was the result of a criminal act.
