Charleston worker dies in shipyard accident

Charleston, SC – Some workplaces are extremely dangerous due to the use of various types of equipment and heavy machinery. These kinds of industrial workplaces are some of the most likely to have workers get seriously injured or killed. After a workplace accident, there are a few different ways that employees and their families can get assistance, such as through the workers compensation process or a wrongful death lawsuit. An attorney who has experience in these areas can provide specific advice about bringing a case against an employer.

There was a news report about a local worker who died in a shipyard while working in North Charleston [1].

Shipyard worker falls to his death while working

The incident began when there were workers using a crane in the shipyard. A cable that was supporting a large object snapped and struck the victim. He then fell off of the area where they were working to the ground several floors down. The impact also knocked off his head and eye protection before he fell.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the victim was a 34 year old male, and that he died on the scene from blunt force injuries related to the accident. The shipyard, which is just a few miles north of downtown Charleston, had another similar incident where a 51 year old male died in a similar manner.

The availability of workers compensation

In cases where a work accident results in any kind of injury, the victim should report to their employer and see if they are eligible for workers compensation. This will help pay for things like medical costs, lost wages, and additional training while the individual recovers.

Wrongful death lawsuits and workplaces

In situations where a workplace incident is fatal, it may be best to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the employer and anyone else responsible. These cases are similar to personal injury lawsuits in the sense that they help pay for costs associated with any accident. However, the damages can be awarded to certain family members through the victim’s estate. These types of cases also allow things like funeral and burial costs, as well as medical treatment and lost wages.
